Help give children of struggling Fauquier families a great first day of school

For over 20 years, Fauquier FISH has provided book bags of school supplies to children in need through our Book Bag School Supply (BBSS) program. This program is a collaborative effort with members of the community to support students facing financial hardships. FISH oversees the enrollment process for families interested in the program and facilitates the pairing of donors with students. Donors are then tasked with procuring backpacks and supplies, tailored to the assigned child’s unique school and grade level. Each August, FISH distributes these bags to families on behalf of donors.

Our distribution for the 2025-2026 school year was held on Aug 9, 2025 and 1,516 backpacks with school supplies were distributed. Thank you to our OVER 200 sponsors and 70 volunteers for the 2025 distribution. With each bag distributed, our community is bridging the gap between privilege and opportunity, ensuring every student in Fauquier County has the opportunity to start school feeling confident and able to succeed.

Fauquier FISH is excited to host our 29th annual Bookbag and School Supplies distribution! Please note that this program is only for families who are unable to afford new school supplies.

How the Program Works:

  • Families register their children through Fauquier FISH.
  • Sponsors register through Fauquier FISH.
  • Beginning on June 21, we match each student with a community sponsor (like you!).
  • Once we can fulfill the request, sponsors receive a child’s ID number, grade, school, and favorite color/character.
  • Sponsors can find each school’s supply list on this webpage under the School Supplies tab  (these are posted to our website whenever they are posted by the schools)
  • Sponsors shop, pack a backpack, and drop it off at FISH. Please purchase a new book bag, water bottle, and school supplies for each student you are sponsoring. 
  • Families pick up their backpacks the Saturday before school starts.

What makes this program special is that every supply list is customized to the student’s school and grade level—so your support directly meets a child’s specific classroom needs.

Important Information:

To help us better match sponsors with student requests, we’re asking supporters to sign up now.  Sponsor assignments will begin on Sunday, June 21, 2026, and you’ll receive an email with your student assignments as soon as we’re able to fulfill your request after that date. 

Fauquier FISH attempts to match your requested grade/school/etc. In the case that we do not have any students available with your request, we may match you to a student who is closest to your requests.

Important Dates:

STUDENT-SPONSOR MATCHING BEGINS: Look for an email after June 21, 2026. 

If you do not receive an email on June 21, 2026 it is because we are not yet able to fulfill your request.  Historically, we have found that applications come in waves.  One day we may have all of our students covered and the next we may have 30 who need a sponsor.  We thank you for your patience during the process.

DROP OFF TIMES:  

  • Tuesday Aug 4, 2026 9:00 am – 1:30 pm
  • Wednesday Aug 5, 2026 9:00 am – 1:30 pm
  • Thursday Aug 6, 2026  4:30 pm – 8:00 pm
  • Friday Aug 7, 2026 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

If you are unable to drop off your sponsored bag during these times, you must email bookbags@fauquierfish.org to make other arrangements.

To make our check-in process more efficient, we are asking each sponsor to download our bag tags and use them.
